People talk a lot of shit about 4E, and a lot of it is justifiable. Because the only thing standing between the common folk and oblivion, is some ragtag bunch of misfits with an eye for loot. Because you, the PCs are vital to the survival of the story. The apocalypse fomented by some dark, misbegotten god from the bowels of the infernal? No church big enough to stop the end of the world, just some murder hobos with moxie.Īnd it works. That evil wizard? Yeah, it’s up to you, because no one else can organise an effective resistance.
The local hamlet being raided by goblins quite literally NEEDS you, brave adventurer, because there is no help coming from the local baron. Human’s still build cities and form organisations, but they don’t span the vast areas you see in Faerun et al. Elves still form dominion over forested areas, but not entire forests. Dwarves still carve out mountains, but they’re isolated strongholds.
So grand kingdoms and empires, civilisation in general, are just so much harder to found, defend, maintain, and therefore the world is limited to much smaller, more easily defendable locations of limited safety and civility.
